The German WWII straight entrenching tool (Kleines Schanzzeug) was a standard infantry item, primarily a flat-bladed, short-handled shovel based on a pre-WWI Danish design. It was produced throughout the war, with carriers changing from all-leather to a mix of leather and artificial materials like Presstoff after 1938. Besides digging, it was used for close combat and chopping wood.
