The US Army M1938 gaiters, officially called “Leggings Canvas Dismounted M1938,” were a key part of the WWII uniform, designed to protect soldiers’ legs and feet from mud, debris, and rocks by closing the gap between low-cut boots and trousers. They were made of durable canvas with a lacing system and metal hooks, and a strap that went under the boot for fastening. Although designed to provide the protection of high boots at a lower cost, they were unpopular due to being time-consuming to put on and often getting snagged.
