The US Army’s M2 helmet liner did not have a leather chin strap; the M2 was a modified M1 helmet for paratroopers that used a specialized chinstrap that attached to the steel shell, with the liner having its own separate A-style leather strap that was secured with inverted “A” straps and a female fastener on the liner itself. The purpose of the modified system was to prevent the liner and shell from separating during jumps. The M2 helmet’s straps were later improved, leading to the development of the M1C helmet, and later, the M2 liner’s chinstrap was replaced with a new style
