What Uniform and Gear Do You Need to Portray a 29th Infantry Division Soldier in Normandy, 1944?
If you’re aiming to reenact a U.S. Army infantryman from the 29th Infantry Division during the invasion of Normandy in 1944—especially around Omaha Beach—authenticity is key. This guide walks you through the essential uniform and equipment needed to accurately represent a frontline “Blue and Gray” soldier on D-Day and in the weeks that followed.
Basic Uniform
Start with the basic uniform, build your impression carefully and rush into buying things you don’t need. In this blog we choose to portray a soldier that has been in the field for a few weeks and not the soldier that has landed on Omaha Beach on June 6th 1944.
Undergarment
- OD Green Vest (tank top) or Cotton undershirt (white or off-white)
- Boxer-style underwear
- Wool socks (OD or brown)
Wool
The basic uniform for most US infantry soldiers start with the wool shirt and trousers.
- M1937 Trousers without flaps over the back pockets mustard brown colour.
- M1937 Shirt also in a mustrad OD brown colour.
- To keep your trouser up and tight you need the M1937 Belt.
- The US M41 Fieldjacket was the common field jacket for every infantry soldier during the Normandy campaign and after.
Optional
- Many 29th Infantry soldiers wore a HBT Uniform over their wool uniform, this is seen during the landings but after the landings too. We list this as optional, check with you reenactment group what the preference is or what you think is best. The OD3 HBT Shirt and HBT Trousers are separate available.
Footwear
- Roughout leather boots or Service boots were both common in the 29th ID
- While you don’t put them on your feet but rather over your boots the M1938 gaiters or legging a standard issue for every soldier in the infantry and needed for you impression.
- Wool socks (OD or brown)
Headwear
- The Garrison Cap is standard issue for soldier and commonly used when not in action or on duty it is best to use the early style model instead of the square cut cap.
- The M1 Helmet is found in differtent styles; fixed bale and swivel bale, with camo net or without, if you are in a group or want to join a group, ask about what the standard is. If you are not in a group, do research and look at original pictures. We will make a blog about the different M1 Helmets used in the European theater of war so you can make your decision a bit easier.
This is the Basic Uniform that most soldiers whore in Normandy 1944.
Gear & Equipment
The most common weapon for the 29th inf. `soldier was the M1 Garand, so for this example we will use equiment related to his weapon.
- M1923 Cardridge Belt that holds 10 clips with 8 cardridges.
- Attached to the Cardridge Belt a M10 Canteen with Cup and Cover.
- Also Attached to the Cardridge Belt is the M1924 Carlisle Pouch with a First Aid Kit
- The M1928 Haversack was to be worn on the back of the soldier and cointained several items like a blanket, a tent half, tent poles and pegs, mess kit, eating utensils, rations and personal items. The M1928 was to be attached to the cardridge belt.
- The T-Shovel or M1910 Entrenchment Tool was to be attached to the M1928 Haversack.
- M1 Bayonet for the M1 Garand was mostly attached to the haver sack but sometimes attached to the M1923 Cardridge Belt.
- M7 Assault Gas Mask Bag was mostly seen during the landings on June the 6th but later in the Normandy campaign too.
Optional Items
Optional items can be differnent from soldier to soldier, and not always necessary for most items. You alway can add things like a scarf, wool sweater or perhaps picture from home or something to read to your kit.
- Dog Tags worn by every soldier
- Ammo Bandoliers filled with extra ammo
- Pocket knife
- Cigarette case or ration pack
- Letter or notebook
- Grenades
- K Rations or D Rations
